Reminds me of an incident many years ago when I was an ad rep for a newspaper. It was a small, suburban paper, which made it more susceptible to advertiser pressure.

One day an advertiser told me of an irate customer who planned to write a letter to the editor. The business owner said she wanted to be notified when the letter ran so she could offer an immediate rebuttal. (Didn't want to wait until the following week's issue.) If she wasn't offered this opportunity, the business owner said she'd stop advertising with us.

Our editor stuck to her guns, saying we wouldn't announce when or if the letter arrived. Thankfully it did not, or we could've been put in a delicate situation. But, I was encouraged by our editor's stance. You have to be willing to stand your ground.

Thanks, Tom. I appreciate the mention in this excellent blog post.

Plus, I agree 100 percent with this statement from the post: "Every publication has a viewpoint and a perspective, and it’s up to the reader to read between the lines."
